From the side, the throat of a male rufous hummingbird appears dark brown, but when he turns to look at you, there is a flash of iridescent colour as the feathers catch the light. This beautiful bird was visiting a rose of sharon seed pod in the spring, left over, untrimmed, from the previous year.
